This Week’s One-Off

The Trip to South Bend

Michigan State has been going to Notre Dame Stadium for a long time and most of it has not gone well. Hotels booked at one in the morning, the drive down US-31, the handful of people who remember a good afternoon there and the many more who remember the other kind, and a fan base that keeps setting itself up for it anyway.

Press & Recruiting

New this week: there are two press conferences. Saturday night is fourteen minutes long, comes twenty minutes after the game, and is entirely about what it felt like, because he has not watched a single frame of tape and keeps saying so. Tuesday is the long one, and by Tuesday he has watched everything twice and has come back to correct two things he said Saturday.

The Question This Week

Is Notre Dame hurt, or is Notre Dame waiting?

They were ranked third in August. Miami beat them 42-6, Wisconsin came to South Bend unranked and won 38-10, and they fell out of the poll entirely. Then they put 52 on Rice and turned up again in others receiving votes. Michigan State is 2-0 and drives there Saturday, and twelve players asked about it this week gave roughly three different answers. One of them said the Irish are hurt and you can see it. Another said everybody keeps saying it was only Rice, and asked what people said about Michigan State beating Eastern Michigan by 28. A third has been going back and forth since Sunday and thinks they are going to be desperate.
