Eastern came in loading the box and they had one guy, Tayou at defensive tackle, who was going to win inside all day no matter who we put on him. He ended up with all four sacks. So running straight at that was never going to work early, and we tried it twice and got nothing.
So the opener was all pass, and specifically all pass to the perimeter and to the tight ends, because their safety was down near the line and there was nobody deep behind the corner. That is the back shoulder touchdown to KK Smith. Then on third and one, when everybody in the stadium including me expects a run, he takes a shot down the field to Smith again and gets 44.
Second quarter is the part I liked. He did not give up on the run, he changed the run. Instead of hitting it inside where Tayou lives, they got Edwards on the edge, used both tight ends as extra bodies, and ran the same looks they had been throwing out of. 22 carries, 158 yards for Edwards, most of it after that adjustment.
That is also why the third down number is 8-of-10. If you are getting five on first down you are never in third and eight.

He opens his hips a beat early, the receiver crosses his face and there is nobody within fifteen yards. That is a technique thing and it is fixable in a week.
The fourth quarter one is the same route from a different formation. The missed tackle on Bennett is a separate issue and it is a strength issue more than anything.
The part nobody wants to hear: he was out there by himself on both of them. Somebody decided he did not need help.
