9.4 would have led the country by a wide margin last year, so on paper it's absurd. Against an FCS defense that's playing a lot of guys who are going to be tired by the third quarter, it's mostly noise. The 31 first downs tell you more, because that's four quarters of moving the ball and not one long run inflating an average.

The interesting part of this game is about eleven minutes long and it's the front structure.
They were sold all offseason as a 4-2-5. Against an option team they played 3-4, they played 4-3, and there were snaps with five down and two backers. On the first drive they were bringing safeties down hard to take away the pitch, which is why the two fullback misdirection runs got that much space at the second level. After they stopped doing that, Grambling never got anything again.
That is a lot of variety for a first game from a staff that has never worked together.

Four of the seven conversions came on third and six or longer, three of those from empty or near-empty sets, and on two of them the ball came out before the back seven had finished rotating. Two of the three failures were in the fourth quarter with the twos in.
I don't think this tells you anything about Notre Dame. I do think it tells you the passing game has an actual answer for the down that killed this offense for three years, which is more than I had at noon.

It's just a list. Nothing about the game changes. The only thing it does is take away the line MSU would have used all year, which is that we went into South Bend and beat a ranked team. Now if we win it's a win over an unranked team, and if we lose it's a loss to an unranked team. Same football either way.

The thing on tape both weeks is interior line play, and it's on both sides of the ball. Miami did it with better players. Wisconsin did it with worse ones, which is the part that should scare them. Once you're getting displaced up the middle it stops mattering what the play was.

Grambling runs option. The quarterback rides the ball to a back, reads one defender, and then hands it, keeps it, or pitches it. Defended right, all three of those have somebody assigned. Michigan State did that. Three times on that drive they had it covered.
What beat them was the play that looks identical for about a second and a half and then goes back inside to the fullback. Twice. One of them went thirty yards.
It worked because they were bringing extra bodies down to make sure nothing got outside, and when you do that nobody is home in the middle. That is the exact spot the counter is drawn to hit.
What changed is they quit doing it. Backed off, kept a linebacker home, made Grambling beat them with the actual option, and Grambling could not.

They're independent, so they play everybody and belong to nobody. The reason this thread can't let it go is that they lost by 28 to a Big Ten team on Saturday, and Michigan State plays at their place in two weeks.

The thing I would actually watch from Saturday is that Michigan State played three, four and five man fronts in one game against an option team. That is a preparation choice and not an opponent choice, and it is the only part of a 56-7 game I would put weight on.

Since nobody is going to ask, here is what actually happened to us on Saturday.
We were down 10 at halftime, we cut it to three, we had the ball on their 34 with four minutes left and we threw it away on second down and then took a sack and then missed a 51 yarder. Same game we have lost about nine times in six years. Our defense was honestly fine. It is the same problem it has been.
Anyway. Long year.

I follow this conference casually because my husband does and I have a real question. Is 17 points bad? It sounds bad from the way everyone is typing but Michigan won so I do not understand what the problem is.
Yes, for Michigan against Western Michigan at home, 17 is bad. Winning is what matters in the standings, but people expected it to be 38-10 and it wasn't, so everyone gets to make jokes for a week. That's basically all this is.

One more thing on Michigan and then I will drop it. Western played two high safeties for basically the whole second half and dared them to run it, and they ran it 31 times for about 3 a carry. That is not a quarterback problem. That is an interior problem and it is going to show up again against a real front.

The case for nothing: it's Grambling State. Every Power Four team is supposed to do that. 618 yards means you can get 618 yards against an FCS defense.
The case for something: the specific shape. They got beaten by misdirection on the opening drive, corrected it inside a quarter, and did not allow another first down. One penalty. Zero sacks allowed. That's not opponent-proof but it's not nothing either.

The honest answer is that an FCS game is a floor test and nothing else. You cannot learn a ceiling from it. You can find out whether the floor has holes.
Transfers: penalties, procedure, substitutions, whether people line up where they are supposed to. Does not transfer: yards, points, per play, anything with a scoreboard in it.
Michigan State passed the part that transfers and put up a big number in the part that doesn't. That is the whole thing.

We had a plan for the opening drive and it worked exactly the way it was drawn. We did not have a plan for the eleven drives after that, because there isn't one when you are outmanned like that. Anybody telling you it means something about them, or nothing about them, wasn't watching the same game.

This is actually a solved question and I am surprised nobody has said it. Week 1 results against FCS opponents are the strongest single predictor of final win total we have. It has been studied. Teams winning by 45 or more in Week 1 average around nine and a half wins. Michigan State is a nine win team and the model has been right about this for fifteen years.

What I took from it is that I was not embarrassed. Six years of going into September braced for something humiliating, and there is a specific tightness in your chest that goes with it, and it was gone by the second quarter. That is not a football conclusion and I know it isn't one. You asked what people take. That is what I took.
