Michigan State opens Saturday against Grambling State. Their head coach is 28, has never played a down of football at any level, and is calling both the offense and the defense. Week 1 Preview

Noon kickoff, home opener. Redshirt freshman Leo Hannan gets his first career start over Alessio Milivojevic, who started most of last season.

I keep seeing this game land around #12 on people's Week 1 watch lists and I don't think it's because anybody expects a good game. It's because nobody has any idea what it's going to look like.

Two things before this gets going.

Grambling State is an FCS program in the SWAC and this is a paid guarantee game, which is a thing your school also does. You can find the matchup funny. The forty comments we removed last night were not that.

Second, the Michigan State head coach is 28 years old. Discuss it all you want. His family, his high school and the marching band photos are off limits, and we are tired of saying so.

we're going to run the ball. we're going to run it a lot. if you've never watched us play that's most of the scouting report and I'm not hiding it from anybody.

genuine question, not a bit. is it actual option or is that just the word everybody's using. every preview I've read says option and then doesn't say anything else

triple option is basically unstoppable if you haven't practiced against it. ask anybody who played navy in the old days

612ReplyShareReport
[–]zoneleft42Michigan State·12h

Navy hasn't run the flexbone in a while, and Grambling isn't running Navy's offense either way. Option is a category. It's not one play.

The part I can't get past is the dual play-calling. Not "he's involved on both sides." Not "he has input." He is the offensive play caller and the defensive play caller of a Big Ten team, in his first year as a head coach anywhere, having never coached a college game.

Every time I bring this up somebody tells me it's fine because he hired a real DC, and I keep saying, ok, but that's the answer you give when you're already a little worried about the same thing I'm worried about.

4.9kReplyShareReportSave
[–]maura_in_grWashington·14h

Week 1 against an FCS team is genuinely the best week to find out whether it's survivable. Nobody is making him run a two-minute drill down four.

2.2kReplyShareReport
[–]juniper_roadNotre Dame·13h

option week is the hardest week for a defensive play caller, not the easiest. you don't get to call a light game against it. you spend four hours making sure eleven guys have the right man and then you do it again on the next snap

1.6kReplyShareReport
[–]maura_in_grWashington·13h

Fair. I meant number of calls, not difficulty of them. You're right that it's the harder version.

Since people keep asking me in DMs: the actual case for and against Rustin Young at center. Long, sorry. Serious

I coached high school offensive line for eleven years, most of it badly, and I am the guy who gets tagged in these threads. So here it is in one place and then I'll stop.

Tackle first, because that's the job he's actually done.

A tackle plays in space. The man across from him has to travel to become a problem, and the tackle gets about a yard of room and a second to use it. Length out there is free money. Long arms mean you touch a rusher before he touches you. Tall tackles are normal. Tall tackles are preferred.

Center is a different sport. He's in a phone booth. There is a nose either right over his head or shaded a half man off it, and that man's whole job is to walk him backward into his own quarterback. You win that with pad level. Hips under you, your shoulder pads under his, force coming up out of the ground. Lower pads win, almost every single time, and it isn't close.

So it's not that tall guys are weak. It's that 6'7 has further to travel to get low, and then has to stay there while doing three other things. And his arms, which are the best thing about him at tackle, do nothing when the fight is happening under his chest.

The three things nobody brings up:

  • The snap is a one-handed athletic movement made while the other hand and both feet are already committed. Half a count late and the guard next to him is blocking air.
  • He IDs the front, declares the Mike, sets the protection, and keeps talking until the ball moves. That's a language and you're supposed to have spoken it ten thousand times. He started in the spring.
  • Short yardage. Third and one is decided in about six inches, and a guy who has to sink first and get movement second is a guy who gets moved backward on the one down where backward is a disaster.

Now the other way, because it's real and I don't want to be the guy who only argues one side.

The center is not your fifth best lineman. He's in on every call and more combination blocks than anyone. If you have one guy who is clearly the best athlete on the line and also one of the smartest people on the roster, the place that buys you the most is the middle, because everywhere else it helps him and in the middle it helps all five. Watch a combo. Center and guard double a three tech, then one of them has to come off and find a linebacker who is already running. That is the most athletic thing an interior lineman does. And in protection the center is the free man more than anybody. He slides, he picks up the late one, he closes a stunt. Length is an asset there instead of a tax.

So: real costs, real benefits. I've talked myself into and out of it about six times since Monday. I lean skeptical and I would be happy to be wrong. It'll be readable on tape by the second series and none of us have to guess for long.

Last Hannan vs Milivojevic thread before we actually see it, and then I promise I'll shut up about it Discussion

We had this argument in July, we had it again after the depth chart came out, and it went the same way both times. I don't think anybody has changed their mind. I'm making the thread anyway because Saturday is going to settle a lot of it and I want it on the record who said what.

Where I am: I liked Milivojevic. I thought he was the reason last year wasn't worse. I also don't get to see practice and Mansour does.

What bothers me is not the decision. It's that the decision was made by a guy who has been here since December and everybody in the building apparently agreed instantly. Milivojevic played through a broken offense last year and did not embarrass anybody. That's supposed to count for something.

I hope I'm wrong. I've been wrong about quarterbacks here going back a long way.

Reminder that the poll does not update after Week 0, so Notre Dame is going to sit at #3 all week after losing 42-6 News

This comes up every single year and every single year half the sub finds out about it fresh. AP does not release a new poll until after Week 1. Miami won 42-6. Notre Dame is #3 until Sunday. That is how it has always worked.

RECRUITING MEGATHREAD — all offer talk goes here. Read the first line before you post. Megathread

An offer is an offer. It is not interest, it is not a lead, it is not a visit, and it is not a commitment. We are removing standalone posts because we had eleven of them on Tuesday and nine were about the same kid.

Current public board as best anybody can tell: Coakley (TE, MD), Landing (CB, MO), Paul (CB, NC), Vaeao (C, CA), Officer (SS, TX), Jennings (CB, OH), Southerland (LB, FL), Barnes (LB, WI), Dickinson (OT, WI), Allgeier (G, SC), Ingold (EDGE, MN), Stick (EDGE, AR), Kane (LB, OH), Leon (WR, AR), Thomas (QB, MI), Peacock (DT, MS), Carter (DT, OH), Grubbs (RB, OH), R. Edwards (EDGE, MI), Fajardo (FS, GA), Bowser (G, MI).

If you post a screenshot of a kid liking a tweet you will be banned for a week. This is not a joke, it happened four times in July.

I want to say the unpopular thing gently. We are not "in on" Carson Coakley. An offer went out.

He is the number one player in the country. Everybody offered him. Georgia offered him, Texas offered him, the schools that have actually signed a five star this decade offered him. Us sending one is not news, it's a form.

What IS interesting is the rest of the board, and nobody wants to talk about the rest of the board because the rest of the board is guards.

GAMEDAY LOGISTICS THREAD — lots, gates, band, weather, where to park if you're bringing somebody who has never done this Casual

Every year we do this and every year somebody still shows up at 11:40 and texts me from a gas station. Post what you know.

What I have: gates at 10, band pregame around 10:40, kick at noon. Lot 63 opens early. Weather is supposed to be perfect, 74 and sunny, which is going to make the beer line worse not better.

Week 1 watchability rankings. I did all 14 Big Ten games and 20 others and I am not taking criticism, I am taking abuse. Discussion

Top of the list, no surprises: Louisville at Ole Miss, SMU at Florida State. After that it gets stupid fast.

I have Grambling at Michigan State at 6, which I know is insane for an FCS game, and I'm going to defend it in the comments until somebody makes me stop.

Small note on the MSU game since OP mentioned it. "FCS tune-up" is doing a lot of work. An option offense against a defense that installed a bunch of new stuff in fall camp is a real football problem, and the reason is boring: you don't beat option with talent, you beat it with the same eleven guys doing the same dull assignment forty straight times.

Talent still wins most of these. It just doesn't win them at halftime.

Am I insane for being genuinely nervous about a Grambling State game Casual

I know the answer is probably yes. I'm asking anyway.

I don't think they're going to beat us. I think I'm nervous because I have no idea what our team is and Saturday is the day I find out, and if it goes badly there is no version of "well it's early" that helps.

You're not insane. You've just been conditioned. Everybody in here has watched this program lose a game it had no business losing at least once in the last decade, and once that happens the number next to a team's name stops feeling like information.

Nine straight minutes. I was in the car for six of them and I had to sit in the driveway for the other three.

I'm not even saying he's wrong. I'm saying a grown man went that hard about the word "normal" and then took a caller from Alma who wanted to talk about parking.

Grambling fan here. Ask me things about my school that aren't about the halftime show. I'll allow two about the halftime show. Discussion

Every year we play one of these games and the same forty questions come up, so I'm doing it in advance this time.

Ground rules: I'm not going to tell you our game plan, I'm not going to predict a score, and if you type the word "cupcake" I'm going to answer a different question.

4.1kReplyShareReport
[–]ruston_roadGrambling State • SWACOP·1d

it pays for a lot of things that aren't football. that's the honest answer and it's the same answer every FCS fan gives you.

I'll say the other part too since people always dance around it. Our guys don't take the field thinking about a check. They take the field thinking they're better than the fourth string of a Big Ten team, which they are, and that if they play well for four quarters something interesting might happen. That's not delusion, that's just what you have to believe to play.

Everybody keeps saying we just need to "look normal." Define it. What are you actually going to be looking at. Serious

The word is doing a lot of work and I think most of us mean different things by it. Post the specific thing. Not "win comfortably." The thing you'll be watching for that tells you whether this is going to be okay.

Mine is boring and pre-snap. Are they lined up and set with time to spare, or is somebody sprinting to a spot as the ball moves. You can tell how well a team has been taught in about four snaps and it has nothing to do with talent.

Second thing, and this one's specific to this game: whether the same guy has the same responsibility on the option all afternoon. Not whether we stop it. Whether the assignment stays put.

Reminder that there are people posting in here who have not seen this team win a game they cared about since high school. Be nice to them Saturday.

Somebody on the Michigan board has written 900 words about why they don't care about the Michigan State game Board Watch

I read rival boards for fun and this week has been a gift. The Michigan board has three separate threads about a Grambling game and every one of them opens with a paragraph about how nobody there is thinking about it.

Not linking it. You all know where it is.

I am one of the people asking them to stop and I would like that on the record.

your record has been noted and immediately ignored

every board does this. ours has a 400 post thread about a coordinator we didn't hire in 2022

the funniest part is that half of them are pretending it's about the sport being embarrassed and the other half just enjoy it. the second group is more honest

I'm in the second group and I'm having a wonderful week

We do the same thing about them and always have. There's a thread on our own board from Tuesday about their gate lines. Nobody comes out of this looking well adjusted.

nobody has ever written 900 words about us and I go back and forth on whether that's a blessing

the guy over there who keeps bringing up their own quarterback in threads about our offensive line is my favorite poster on the internet and he doesn't know it

two fanbases who both went 6-6 arguing about which one is embarrassing. beautiful week for the conference

none of this matters saturday at noon. that's the only thing I keep telling myself and it's not working

somebody over there called our fanbase "a support group with a parking lot" and I've been thinking about it all day because it's correct

three michigan schools in this thread and none of them are talking about the one playing the best football right now. anyway. see everybody next week.

I'll be doing this again next week with a different board. it's the only hobby I have left.
