The preseason Top 25 does not update until after this weekend. Miami’s 42-6 win over Notre Dame in Week 0 does not move the ballot. Michigan State, unranked, opens at home against Grambling State at noon Saturday.
Big Ten: 1-0 in Week 0
First poll update: after Week 1
College football opens its first full weekend of the season Saturday with the preseason Top 25 still standing as the sport’s official ranking. Voters do not submit a ballot between kickoff weekend and Week 1. The rankings released in August remain in place through Saturday’s games, and the first in-season poll follows.
The clearest consequence is at No. 3. Notre Dame lost to Miami 42-6 in the Week 0 opener and is ranked third this week, because the ballot that placed it there was cast before the game was played.
USC was the only Big Ten team to play in Week 0. The Trojans won. The conference’s other 17 members, Michigan State among them, open this weekend.
Michigan State is unranked and did not receive votes. The Spartans are 0-0 and host Grambling State, an FCS program from the SWAC, at noon Saturday. Michigan State plays at Notre Dame in Week 3.

Michigan State appears on neither list. The Spartans changed head coaches in the offseason and return a redshirt freshman quarterback who has not started a college game. No preseason ballot placed them in consideration.
Miami led throughout and was not seriously threatened. It is the only game either program has played. Both poll positions, Miami at No. 6 and Notre Dame at No. 3, were set in August and are unchanged.
Notre Dame is expected to move in the first in-season ballot. How far is a matter of speculation until that ballot is published after Saturday.
Michigan State plays at Notre Dame in Week 3. The game has been treated throughout the offseason as the first meaningful measurement of the Spartans’ new staff. The Week 0 result has changed the framing of that game without changing its date.
Coaches on both sides have been asked about it and have declined to engage with it. Michigan State head coach Nick Mansour was asked about Notre Dame on Tuesday and said he had not watched the game.
USC is ranked No. 15 and will hold that position through Saturday. No conference standings are affected; league play has not begun.
Robinson forced two fumbles and recovered both, accounting for four turnover events in one game. Virginia was among the others-receiving-votes group in the preseason ballot.
Craig completed 21 of 27 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns and added 50 rushing yards in his first start for TCU. He transferred from Harvard in the offseason. TCU was also receiving votes in the preseason poll.

The betting and media favorite entering the season. A wide receiver has not won the award since 1991.

Returning starter at the No. 2 team in the country. Oregon opens at home this weekend.
Third on the preseason board. Texas is ranked No. 7.

Ohio State holds two of the top four positions on the preseason board.
The only game this weekend between two ranked teams. Louisville is the lowest-ranked team playing a ranked opponent in Week 1. Ole Miss opens at home.
An ACC opener. SMU is ranked 22nd. Florida State is unranked and opens at home. Both programs open conference play in this game.
The remainder of the schedule is the standard opening Saturday: a large number of games in which ranked teams host unranked or FCS opponents. Michigan State–Grambling State is one of them. National viewing guides have listed it in that category.

First in the preseason poll and first in the conference’s preseason media vote. Ohio State has two players in the top four of the Heisman board, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and quarterback Julian Sayin.

Ranked second and picked second in the conference media vote. Oregon plays at Michigan State in Week 12.

Fifth in the preseason poll, the highest preseason ranking in program history. Indiana reached the College Football Playoff in Cignetti’s first season.
Indiana is not on Michigan State’s 2026 schedule. It is cited frequently in East Lansing as the recent example of a Big Ten program improving quickly under a new staff.

Ranked 14th. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, the highest-rated recruit in the program’s history, enters his second season.
Michigan State plays at Michigan in Week 10.

Ranked 17th following a coaching change. James Franklin was dismissed and is now the head coach at Virginia Tech. Penn State is not on Michigan State’s 2026 schedule.

The conference’s only Week 0 participant and its only team with a result. USC is 1-0 and ranked 15th. It is not on Michigan State’s 2026 schedule.
Washington is ranked 23rd and plays at Michigan State in Week 11. UCLA is unranked and hosts Michigan State in Week 8.
Michigan State’s 2026 schedule includes one trip to Los Angeles and a home game against Washington within a four-week span, the first such stretch on a Michigan State schedule.
Michigan State occupies a small place in national coverage this week. The reason is the hire. Nick Mansour is 28, has never played organized football, calls both the offense and the defense, and came to the position from public film analysis rather than a conventional coaching track. National outlets have covered the appointment as an unusual personnel decision by a Power Four institution.
Saturday’s game is not on a national broadcast window and does not appear in the lead section of published Week 1 viewing guides. References to it in national previews are generally brief and note the coach’s age or his time in the Spartan Marching Band.
Michigan State has played no games and has released no depth chart information beyond its Week 1 listing. Quarterback Leo Hannan, a redshirt freshman, will make his first career start.
Grambling State runs an option offense. Option teams require every defender to execute a specific assignment on every snap and to tackle in space. Michigan State is installing a 4-2-5 defense with lighter personnel that has not played together. That matchup is the principal football question available in a game the sport has otherwise categorized as an opening-week formality.
Poll. No update until after Saturday’s games. Notre Dame is ranked No. 3 with an 0-1 record. Ohio State is No. 1, Oregon No. 2.
Ranked games. No. 24 Louisville at No. 9 Ole Miss. No. 22 SMU at Florida State.
Big Ten. Seventeen members open. USC, the conference’s only Week 0 participant, is 1-0.
Michigan State. Hosts Grambling State at noon on Big Ten Network. The Spartans are 0-0. Eastern Michigan visits next week; Michigan State plays at Notre Dame in Week 3.
