[Brooks] Michigan State is hiring Nick Mansour, 28, as its next head coach. Mansour's only head coaching experience is one season at a Brooklyn high school. News

From the story: Mansour, a 2019 MSU grad, gets authority over roster construction, recruiting, NIL allocation, staffing and player development. He is expected to call plays on offense and defense.

one season. of high school. head coaching.

I need everybody to sit with that sentence for a full minute before we start doing the "well ACTUALLY the sport is changing" thing.

Rule 1 applies to coaching hires, including hires you find funny. We have removed about 200 comments in here already and issued 14 bans. Nothing about the coach's family. Nothing about the previous administration's legal matters. Do not go into r/MSUSpartans to celebrate — we can see you do it and you will get banned here for it.

Yes, we know how the flairs look. Behave anyway.

Genuinely not a shot: how does a coaching search physically arrive here? There are steps. You hire a firm, the firm gives you a list, the list has names, the names have jobs. Somewhere in that process a human being had to say "what about the draft guy" out loud, in a room, to other adults, and not get laughed out of the building.

That's the reporting I want. Not the guy. The room.

3.3kReplyShareReportSave
[–]throwawayBigTenGuyBig Ten·10h

The room got laughed at. That's the whole thing. They kept going anyway because every other name on the list was somebody who'd already been fired somewhere for the exact reasons MSU keeps firing people.

People asked that same question about our search and the answer turned out to be "the AD was right and everybody else was pattern matching." I'm not saying MSU found that. I'm saying a room getting laughed at is not, by itself, information.

Everyone's stuck on the age. The line that actually stopped me: he is calling offense AND defense. In the Big Ten. Year one. Having never coached a college snap.

I can't think of a single Power Four head coach doing both right now.

They hired Joe Rossi as DC. Rossi is a real defensive coordinator with a real track record. So either he is the most overqualified analyst in America or somebody is losing that argument in October.

Small thing in the release that will matter more than the age: the personnel department is being built under Marcus Whitman, who came out of the same public scouting world Mansour did. Board-driven, role-first evaluation, all of that vocabulary.

You can think the head coach is unqualified and still notice that's a real structural decision. Other schools are watching that piece, not the trombone.

I have had season tickets since 1994 and I genuinely do not know what I'm supposed to feel right now MELTDOWN MEGATHREAD

I sat through the 4-8 years. I sat through the good years and didn't enjoy them because I was waiting for the other shoe. I sat through Tucker. I sat through Smith and told everybody at my tailgate to be patient because that's what you're supposed to say.

And now the school has handed the entire football program — roster, NIL, staff, the play sheet, both play sheets — to somebody who was in the marching band while my daughter was in the marching band. She graduated with people who knew him. She texted me a picture of him at a basketball game holding a bass guitar.

I'm not even mad. I think I'd rather be mad. Mad is a feeling I know how to have.

Mods, this can be the meltdown thread. Put it all here.

The thing I keep coming back to isn't the age. It's that they gave him everything. Roster, NIL, personnel, staff, both coordinators' jobs.

If you're going to make a wild hire, wild hires normally come with guardrails. A veteran GM over him. A strong AD saying no sometimes. This one came with a title that reads like "do whatever you want."

Either they believe in him completely or nobody left in that building wanted to be responsible for anything.

Unpopular here but I've been done being embarrassed for a while. We've had "credible" hires. We hired the guy everyone said was the safe answer and it was a disaster in a different font. We hired the exciting rising star and that ended in a way I don't want to type out.

Talk me into this. Genuinely. Discussion

Not a bit, not a setup, not looking for people to tell me it's over. I know it might be over. I'm asking for the actual case.

If you've watched his stuff, if you know the personnel side, if you've read the plan and it made sense to you — I want to hear it in plain language. What is the argument that this works? Not "anything is possible." The argument.

I'm 34, I've been doing this my whole life, and I'd like one reason to be excited that isn't just fatigue.

Okay. I'll do it, because I've been building this post in my head all day and I'm not going to sleep anyway.

Start with what actually broke here. It wasn't that we hired bad men. We hired people with normal résumés who were behind on how the sport now works, and then we asked them to fix a roster problem with recruiting tools from 2015. Tucker's fall was its own catastrophe. The Smith stretch was slower and quieter and honestly more depressing, because there was nothing scandalous to point at. We just weren't good and there was no visible mechanism for becoming good. The portal moves didn't hit. Development didn't happen. Guys we signed at three stars stayed three star players for four years.

That's the failure. Not vibes. Acquisition and development. Two things.

Now look at what this hire is actually betting, because it isn't "young guy = energy":

  1. The evaluator part is real. Whatever you think of draft content as a job, he did the work publicly for years and it's on record. You can go check the hit rate. That's more transparency than we've ever had on a coordinator hire. And the personnel guy, Whitman, comes from that same world — the whole department is being built around a board instead of around whoever's phone rings.
  2. The roster problem is a matching problem. We don't lose because our guys are worse athletes than Illinois'. We lose because our guys are asked to do things they're not built for. Tre Bell has been a mediocre boundary corner for two years. Put him at nickel where he can cover, blitz, and hit the run fits and he's a completely different evaluation. Same player. Different job. If you can do that four or five times across a roster you've found a whole recruiting class for free.
  3. "Complex for opponents, simple for us." That's the actual stated identity and it's not a slogan, it's a design constraint. Formation, motion, personnel, spacing, sequencing — you make the picture hard on the other side and easy on your own quarterback. That is the single best thing you can do for a young QB, and we happen to have a young QB whose ceiling is the whole season.
  4. The defense is a 4-2-5 with simulated pressure and DB versatility. Meaning: you don't need four future pros on the D-line to be functional, which is good, because we don't have them. You need speed, tackling, and gap discipline. Our linebacker room — Hall, Crawford, White, Pretzlaff, Stodghill — is the deepest, most athletic group on the team by a wide margin. That's the one place the roster and the scheme already agree.

Here's what I'm NOT saying. I'm not saying he's a genius. I'm not saying the interior offensive line is fixable this year, because I don't think it is, and it may end up deciding what the offense is even allowed to be. I'm not saying a 28 year old can run a Tuesday, discipline a senior, hold a locker room in November, work a living room in Detroit, and call two play sheets. That's five jobs and nobody knows if he can do any of them, including him. He basically said so.

What I'm saying is the plan is coherent. It's the first coherent plan I've heard articulated by this program in a decade. It might be a coherent plan executed by somebody incapable of executing it — that's a real outcome and probably the most likely one.

But you asked for the case, and the case is: for the first time since I was in school, I can describe what we're trying to do in one paragraph without lying.

2.9kReplyShareReportSaveGive Award
[–]KelseyInGROPMichigan State·8h

This is what I asked for and I want you to know it worked a little. The Tre Bell thing especially. I've been mad at that kid for two years and it never occurred to me that we might have just been playing him in the wrong place.

1.1kReplyShareReport
[–]zoneleft42Michigan State • Film·8h

Go back and watch him in space against tempo teams. He's not slow and he's not dumb. He's been asked to play on an island against guys with a 20 yard head start. Nobody survives that.

604ReplyShareReport
[–]basicallyBrianMichigan State·7h

Good post and I still think you're doing the thing where a coherent plan gets treated as evidence about a person.

Every failed coach in America had a coherent plan. Coherent plans are cheap. What's expensive is the 400 small decisions a week that nobody writes an effortpost about — who gets benched, which parent gets a phone call, whether the strength staff gets overruled, what happens the first time a starter is late twice. He has done exactly one year of that, with sixteen year olds, in a building where he was the oldest person in the room by a decade.

Now he's the youngest.

Smaller case than the big post above but here's mine: he can talk. That sounds shallow and it isn't.

The last two guys could not explain this program to a booster, a recruit's mother, a student, or a camera. Every message we got for four years came out sounding like a legal statement. This school has a trust problem that has nothing to do with football, and the job requires somebody who can stand in front of angry people and not make it worse.

Communication is not the whole job. But it's the part of the job we have failed at most publicly, for the longest time, and it's the part we now definitely have.

Nobody's mentioned Savoury. Redshirt freshman tight end starting week 1. If you want a single early read on whether the offensive ideas are real, watch how they use him in the first two games. Here's the actual talk-you-into-it, and it isn't about him, it's about the quarterback call.

Every coach we've had in fifteen years would have started Alessio. Not because they studied it. Because starting the older guy is what you do when your real priority is not being blamed. This is the first decision I've seen out of that building in a long time where somebody accepted the blame in advance.

Might be wrong! Probably feels awful in October! But it's a different kind of wrong than the wrong we've been doing.

The Hannan decision is going to define this season and I don't think people are ready for that QB MEGATHREAD

Everybody spent five days arguing about a 28 year old's résumé and mostly skipped the actual football decision he already made, which is the one we're going to be living inside every Saturday from September to whenever this ends.

He's starting a redshirt freshman. Over a guy who took a broken offense last year and made it look like an offense. Not a great one. An offense. That is a real thing that a real person did in real games while most of you were writing "same old State" in this subreddit.

And I want to be fair — I've read the upside argument, I understand it, I'm not a caveman. But I've also been alive for a while and I've watched a lot of coaches fall in love with the guy who throws the pretty ball in shorts.

So here's the thread. Yell about it here instead of in eleven other threads. I'll go first: I think he's right about the ceiling and I think he's underrating what it costs.

This is the QB thread. We are merging the other six into it, including yours, yes, the one you're about to message us about.

Two things. Neither of these kids is a public figure who signed up for message board discourse, so keep it on the football. And if you post the phrase "he should transfer" you are going to find out how we feel about that phrase.

Alessio held that thing together when it had absolutely no business being held together. Bad line, no run game, nobody open, and the guy kept getting them to the next play. Every week. He was the reason a couple of those games stayed watchable into the fourth quarter.

You don't take the job from that guy in August because somebody's arm looks better in a t-shirt. That's not player development, that's shopping.

And I'll say the quiet part: this is a guy who spent five years making content about which quarterback looks coolest picking the one who looks coolest. I would love to be wrong. I have been wrong before. I don't think I'm wrong here.

2.9kReplyShareReportSave
[–]zoneleft42Michigan State • Film·7h

The job isn't a reward for last year. It's an allocation of reps in a year where reps are the only currency this roster has.

You have a rebuild. You are not winning the league. The question a coach in that spot asks is "which of these two answers can still be getting better in November," and if you're honest with yourself you already know how that one comes out.

2.4kReplyShareReport

I watched it too. I watched a competent player survive a bad situation. Surviving a bad situation is a skill and it is not the same skill as raising the ceiling of the offense, and pretending those are the same thing is how you end up 6-6 forever and calling it stability.

I like the decision. I hate how sure everybody in here is about it, on both sides.

Nobody posting today knows how either of them handles third and eight at Notre Dame with a crowd on top of them, because neither of them has done it. That's the whole thing. That's the actual content of the disagreement. We are all arguing about a fact that doesn't exist yet.

Half of you have decided the freshman is a franchise guy off clips. The other half have decided the older kid is a leader of men off vibes and one decent stretch. You're all doing the same thing with different favorites.

2.6kReplyShareReportSave
[–]secondandnineMichigan State·6h★ Gold ×2Platinum

Long one, sorry. I've been chewing on this since Tuesday and I want to put the actual logic on the table instead of everybody yelling "ceiling" and "earned it" at each other.

When you take over a program in this condition you are not choosing between winning and losing this year. You're choosing what you own in eighteen months. Every rep you spend is either buying information or buying comfort.

Playing the older guy buys comfort. You know roughly what the offense looks like, you know the huddle is calm, you probably keep a couple of games from getting embarrassing, and the fanbase doesn't riot in September. All real. All worth something. The problem is that at the end of it you know exactly as much as you know today, and the thing you know is not good enough to win the division in any year.

Playing the freshman buys information, and information in a rebuild is the only asset that appreciates. Either the answer is on the roster, in which case you found it a year early and you build the next two recruiting classes around a known quantity, or the answer isn't on the roster, in which case you know that in October and you go get one instead of discovering it in 2028.

The other thing nobody's saying: the cost of being wrong is asymmetric here. If the freshman isn't ready, the downside is a season that was already going to be hard being slightly harder, plus a young player having a rough public autumn, which is bad but survivable. If you sit him and he was the guy, you burned a year of the only genuinely scarce thing this program has.

Coaches who inherit wreckage and play for floor almost always get fired by the guy who eventually plays for ceiling. That pattern is old and it is boring and it is still true.

I'm not telling you it works. I'm telling you it's a real framework and not a content creator picking a toy.

3.4kReplyShareReportSave
[–]grandriverghostMichigan State·5hSilver

Good post, and I think the middle third of it is wrong.

You're treating floor like it's free. It isn't. Floor is the thing that keeps the building from turning on itself in October, and this building has turned on itself in October in three separate administrations.

Second problem: you keep saying "information" like the reps are clean. He's going to be taking those reps behind an interior line that nobody, including the staff, is willing to say a nice sentence about. What information do you get from a kid running for his life? You learn how he handles chaos. You don't learn whether he can play quarterback.

I'd have made the same call. I'd just stop pretending the case is airtight, because the moment the line gets him hit six times in a half at Wisconsin, half of the people upvoting you are going to be writing "this staff has no idea what it's doing."

2.2kReplyShareReport
[–]secondandnineMichigan State·5h

The line point is fair and it's the one I don't have an answer for. If the interior is as bad as the last two years then neither quarterback matters much and we're all arguing about the paint job on a car with no wheels.

I was at the spring game. Sat low, behind the bench side, mostly because my nephew wanted to see the tunnel. So this is not film study, it's just what I saw with my eyes for three hours.

Alessio talks the entire time. To everybody. Between reps he's got a receiver by the shoulder pad walking him through something, he's in the ear of the young linemen, he claps for the defense when the defense does something good, which is a weird thing to notice but I noticed it. Guys look at him when he talks. That's not a nothing quality.

Hannan barely says anything. He stands slightly apart, does this thing where he rolls the ball around in his right hand while he's waiting. When he got something wrong he didn't do the head-down thing, he went and stood by the coach and asked. Twice I saw him ask before anyone came to him.

The other thing, and I don't know what it means: he threw one to the far sideline in the second half and the sound the crowd made was not a normal spring game sound. It was like eight thousand people going "oh" at the same time and then kind of laughing at themselves for it. I've been going to these since I was a kid. I've heard that noise maybe three times.

Neither of those is an argument. That's just the two guys as I saw them.

Something I haven't seen anybody give him credit for in four days of this: he has not let anybody turn Alessio into a loser. Not once.

Every reporter in that room tried to get him to say the kid was a placeholder. That's the easy sound bite, it writes itself, and coaches take it every single time because it makes the new guy sound like a savior. He wouldn't do it. He said neither of them has to lose for the other one to play and then he named something the older kid actually does well, on camera, in front of everybody.

My son played high school ball for a man who would have thrown him under a bus for a laugh from a local radio guy. So maybe I'm soft on this. It registered with me.

Serious question: is Michigan State insane, or are they weirdly ahead of the curve? Discussion

Set aside the age for one thread. I want to argue about the structure.

Every program in America is currently pretending it has a front office. Most of them bolted a "GM" onto a staff where the head coach still decides everything and the GM makes spreadsheets nobody reads. MSU just did the opposite thing in the loudest possible way: they made the evaluator the head coach.

Is that the actual next step, or is it a category error? Because if the job is now roster construction plus cap management plus development, and coaching the ball is one of five things instead of the whole thing, then hiring somebody whose entire skill set is evaluation isn't crazy. It's early.

Or it's a school with no leverage cosplaying as an innovator. Convince me.

Category error, and here's the specific reason: NFL GMs don't coach because the two jobs have opposite time horizons. A GM's job is patient and the payoff is in two years. A head coach's job is Saturday. When those collide inside one skull, Saturday wins every single time, because Saturday is the thing that gets you fired.

You can't be the guy who says "we're developing this freshman" and also the guy who has to beat Nebraska in October to keep your building calm.

3.4kReplyShareReportSave
[–]DetroitLawDuckOPOregon·9h

That's the strongest version of the no and I don't have a great answer for it. Counter attempt: in college the two horizons already collapsed. Your roster turns over 30% every December. Two years IS the short term now.

1.1kReplyShareReport
[–]buckeye_actuaryOhio State·8h

Which makes it worse, not better. If everything is short term then the evaluation advantage decays before it compounds. You get one December to be smarter than everyone and then they copy you.

The structure isn't "evaluator does everything," for what that's worth. Whitman runs personnel, Sheridan runs the QB and passing-game teaching, Rossi runs the defense as a department. Mansour has final say and calls plays. That's closer to a soccer manager than an NFL GM.

Whether that's clever or a diagram somebody drew on a plane, I have no idea.

644ReplyShareReport
[–]westwood_wretchUCLA·8h

The honest answer is that the Big Ten is now 18 teams across four time zones, every roster is rebuilt annually, half the league has a coach in year one or two, and nobody knows what the job is anymore. In that environment "insane" and "ahead of the curve" are the same sentence with different lighting.

As someone whose program just blew up its entire identity: the "ahead of the curve" framing only works if the institution behind it is stable. Ideas need a building that will still be standing in year three.

He costs a fraction of a normal P4 head coach. That money didn't evaporate — it goes to staff and roster. If MSU is paying a mid-tier head coach's salary and spending the difference on personnel and player retention, that's the actual experiment, and it has nothing to do with whether he's a genius.

The bye first is actually useful for a staff that has never worked a game week together. They get a full dress rehearsal with no scoreboard. Every new staff botches something operational in game one — headsets, substitutions, the sideline getting a call in on time. This one gets a practice run at it.

[WEEK 0 MEGATHREAD] Miami–Notre Dame, everything else, and all your dumb August takes in one place MEGATHREAD

Season's here. Post scores, streams, complaints about the broadcast, and predictions you will be reminded of in December.

Sunday primetime: #6 Miami at #3 Notre Dame.
Poll notes: Ohio State and Oregon are 1–2 in the Big Ten media poll. Indiana is defending what they did last year. Penn State opens the post-Franklin era. Michigan opens with Bryce Underwood and a nation of people ready to be annoyed.
Also: yes, we know about Michigan State. There is a dedicated thread. Take it there.

Michigan State's 28-year-old head coach just gave the most self-aware introductory press conference I have ever heard [7:42] Video

Timestamps if you don't want the whole thing:

2:10 — "Michigan State doesn't get to ask for trust. It has to earn it. That includes me, and I haven't earned anything yet."
4:35 — asked directly whether he's qualified. Doesn't deflect. Says the résumé is unusual and that he understands why people find it hard to take seriously, then explains what he actually does.
6:02 — asked about the quarterback situation and refuses to make either player a storyline. "Neither of them has to lose for the other one to play."

I came to laugh. I did not laugh.

He is a communications professional. Communicating well is his literal profession. Everyone in this thread is watching a PR guy do PR and calling it authenticity.

Show me him at 3-5 explaining why the offense can't run the ball. That press conference is the one that tells you anything.

4.4kReplyShareReportSave
[–]basicallyBrianOPPenn State·7h

Completely fair. I'd only push back on one thing: I've watched a LOT of intro pressers from coaches with PR staffs and media training and they're all still terrible. Being trained doesn't make you good at it. Most of them sound like a hostage video read off a card.

Him being good at the one thing he's supposed to be good at is not nothing. It's also not football.

I have spent 24 hours making fun of this hire and I'm going to be honest with you people: the 4:35 answer was good. He didn't get defensive, he didn't do the fake humble thing, and he didn't pretend the question was unfair. He said "yeah, that's a reasonable thing to be skeptical about, here's what I actually do all day."

I still think it's a disaster. But that was a grown man answering a hard question, which is more than I can say for the last four coaches my school hired.

The 6:02 answer is the one that got me and nobody's talking about it. Reporter absolutely teed him up to make the older quarterback sound like a placeholder — easy sound bite, everybody does it — and he refused. Twice. Then he named something specific the guy does well.

That's a small thing that a 28 year old with no experience had zero reason to get right, and he got it right in real time under lights.

Michigan State is starting a redshirt freshman over the guy who saved their offense last year. Is this brave or stupid? Discussion

Lost in five days of jokes about the 28 year old: he already made the one decision that's going to get him judged. He named a redshirt freshman the starter over the guy who kept that offense functional through a genuinely miserable year.

I have no dog in this. I just think it's the most interesting bet anybody in this league made this offseason and it got about four percent of the attention the marching band photos got.

Every fanbase on this subreddit has a backup quarterback they are personally convinced is a franchise guy being held down by a coward. It is the single most universal delusion in the sport.

The difference at Michigan State is the head coach agrees with the message board. Which is either the funniest thing I've ever heard or a five alarm fire, and honestly it might be both.

Everybody wants the lesson from our run to be "be bold," and that's the wrong lesson. Cignetti was right about a lot of small things in a row, and being right looks like boldness to everybody who wasn't in the room for it.

Nobody calls a decision brave until they know how it turned out. If the freshman plays well this is conviction. If he doesn't it's a 28 year old who fell for an arm. Nothing about the decision itself changes in between.

The timing is the defensible part and nobody's mentioned it. Their September is Grambling, Eastern Michigan, then Notre Dame on the road. You start the freshman now, he gets two games to be a college quarterback before anything real happens to him. Wait until October and his first live snaps come in a stadium that wants him dead.

If you've decided the kid is your future, the calendar is telling you to do it in week one. That's a coaching reason, not a content reason.

This is textbook first-time head coach. Not because he's stupid — because he doesn't have a year three yet. A guy on his third job protects the floor because he's been fired before and knows what November feels like when the building stops believing you. A guy who's never been fired has no idea what he's protecting himself from.

Sometimes that's exactly why the new guy sees something the old guys wouldn't touch. Usually it's why he's the new guy again in 30 months.

Two unrelated things, one post, sorry.

1) The season poster is out and it's actually good this year. Green on green, no player photos, just the helmet and the dates. Whoever got rid of the giant floating heads deserves a raise.

2) My renewal came through with a different lot than the last six years and no explanation. Called ticket office, waited 40 minutes, got a very nice young woman who did not know either. Is this happening to anybody else or did I get personally selected.

I watched 40 minutes of the new Michigan State coach's film breakdowns so you don't have to Video

Indiana fan, no dog in this, insomnia is undefeated. Sat down at 1am expecting a guy pointing at Madden telestrator arrows and instead got 41 straight minutes of a person explaining why a quarterback's second read is late.

Notes, unorganized:

  • He does not do the thing where he tells you a player is good. He tells you what the player is being asked to do and then whether the tape shows him doing it. Different verb.
  • Spends four full minutes on ONE snap. Not the throw. The pre-snap. Where the safety was, what the motion did to the safety, what the QB looked at after the motion. I have watched paid television analysts skip that for six years.
  • Never says "elite." Not once in 41 minutes. I went back and checked because I couldn't believe it.
  • He is very obviously a communications guy. The structure of the video is the tell — thesis, three cases, a case against himself, done.

That last part is what got me. He spends five minutes arguing against his own take. Voluntarily. On YouTube. Where nobody makes you do that.

None of this means he can run a Big Ten program. I want to be extremely clear about that before 400 of you tell me. It just wasn't what I expected and I'd rather say so.

Everything in this post is true and none of it is the job.

Evaluating other people's finished players is a completely separate skill from making your own players finished. Scouting is a verdict. Coaching is a process. He has spent his entire adult life on the verdict side of that line and he has never once had to stand in front of a 19 year old on a Wednesday and fix something by Saturday.

That's not a shot at his tape work. His tape work is fine. It's just answering a question nobody at Michigan State needs answered.

2.9kReplyShareSave···
[–]throwawayBigTenGuyBig Ten·8h

The half of it people keep missing: the guys who are good at the verdict side usually cannot TEACH the verdict. They know it, they can't hand it to somebody. That's why so many great evaluators are miserable position coaches.

If he can hand it over, the staff gets smart fast. If he can't, he's the smartest man in a building that never gets any smarter.

The detail that actually moved me a little: he never says the player's ceiling. He says what the player would need around him. That's a role-design brain, not a highlight brain. It's also, notably, how you build a roster when you cannot outrecruit anybody.

Whether he can do that with 105 humans and a compliance office instead of a laptop is the entire question and I don't know the answer.

What's the actual floor and ceiling for Michigan State this year? Serious projections only, I'm begging Discussion

Every Mansour thread is 3,000 comments of trombone jokes and I have not seen one person put a number on this. So here's mine, ripped straight out of my spreadsheet, no adjustment for vibes.

WK OPP LOC WIN%
1 Grambling St H 96
2 Eastern Mich H 84
3 Notre Dame A 6
4 Nebraska H 41
5 Wisconsin A 33
6 Illinois H 38
7 Northwestern H 57
8 UCLA A 35
10 Michigan A 11
11 Washington H 29
12 Oregon H 9
13 Rutgers A 44
                    ----------
        EXPECTED WINS: 4.83

Floor is 2-10 and it isn't hard to draw. Interior OL gets wrecked, they can't run it, the QB is a redshirt freshman, and the schedule hands them Oregon and a road Michigan game in the same month you find out who you are.

Ceiling is 7-5 and it needs three things at once: Cam Edwards stays healthy for twelve games, the linebackers are actually as good as everybody quietly thinks, and they steal one of Nebraska/Illinois/Washington at home. That's it. That's the whole ceiling. Nobody is playing in December.

Tell me where the model's wrong.

Your Northwestern number is insane. 57% for a team that has no idea who its quarterback is playing a team that always knows exactly what it is. That game is a coin flip at best and probably worse.

Everything else is defensible. The Rutgers road game at 44 is the one that'll actually decide whether this season feels survivable, and nobody in this thread is going to talk about it because it's Rutgers.

2.1kReplyShareSave···
[–]boxscorecowardOPNeutral·7h

Northwestern's at 57 because it's a home game in week 7 against a team that ranked 100+ in explosive plays allowed. I'm not projecting the coach, I'm projecting the roster. That's the whole point of doing it this way.

Your model has no variable for the thing that actually decides first-year programs, which is how many games get away in the fourth quarter.

Bad teams with good rosters lose four games by a possession. Bad teams with bad culture lose those same four by three scores because the game breaks in the third quarter and nobody stops it. Every number you wrote is downstream of whether a 28 year old can hold a locker room at 2-4.

You can't put that in a spreadsheet, which is exactly why the spreadsheet isn't going to be right this year.

2.6kReplyShareSave···
[–]boxscorecowardOPNeutral·5h

This is the best response in here and it's also unfalsifiable, which is the problem with it. If they go 6-6 you'll say the locker room held. If they go 3-9 you'll say it didn't. Same evidence.

Effortpost incoming, sorry.

The reason I think the floor is lower than 2-10 and the ceiling is higher than 7-5 — meaning the variance is enormous, not that the projection is wrong — is the interior offensive line. It is the single least-solved thing on this roster and it touches every other number in that table.

If the interior holds up, you can run Cam Edwards 22 times, you can play-action a redshirt freshman into comfortable throws, you can shorten games and hide a defense that's replacing pieces. That's the 7-5 world and honestly a 8-4 world if two coin flips land.

If it doesn't hold up, you cannot run, so you cannot play-action, so the freshman is throwing on third-and-8 in Madison in October with the crowd doing that thing they do. And then you're not 2-10, you're 1-11 and the fourth quarters are ugly enough that everybody starts writing columns about the experiment failing before Halloween.

Five interior linemen. That's the season. Everybody's arguing about a 28 year old and the answer is going to come from three guys nobody outside East Lansing can name.

Every projection in this thread is really a projection of one thing: whether a redshirt freshman quarterback is closer to ready or closer to hopeless. The floor and the ceiling are the same guy. That's why the range on this team is enormous and everybody's number is basically a mood.

2.4kReplyShareReportSave
[–]sleepy_badgerWisconsin·4h

the ceiling is also the guy standing next to him holding a clipboard, which is the part their fanbase refuses to think about. if the freshman drowns in September they have somewhere to go. most rebuilds don't.

Anonymous coaches on the Mansour hire are BRUTAL Article

They surveyed 41 assistants and personnel people across the P4. Some of the pull quotes:

"I'm not going to sit here and pretend I'm above it. I've been grinding since I was 22. I've moved my kids six times. He made videos."
"You want my real fear? It's not that he fails. It's that he goes 7-5 and every AD in the country decides the last twenty years of my life were optional."
"He'll get eaten alive on the road in this league in year one. That's not an opinion, that's a schedule."
"Everybody's talking like he's a podcast guy. He built boards. I've seen his boards. That's a real thing he can actually do."

The last one is the only positive quote in the whole piece and it's still describing him as a personnel guy, not a coach.

The second quote is the entire article and everybody's going to skip past it to dunk on the first one.

They're not afraid he's bad. They're afraid he's fine. A guy who's fine at 28 with no résumé is an existential problem for every 44 year old assistant who's been told to wait his turn since 2009.

I know at least two of the people quoted in there. Both of them have been passed over for a coordinator job in the last 18 months. That doesn't make them wrong. It does mean you're reading a survey of the losers of the current system about a guy who skipped the line.

I've been around him a little. Combine week stuff, some scouting-adjacent events, mutual people. Not a friend, but I've been in rooms.

Two things are true. He is genuinely, unusually good at getting grown men to argue with him and then change their minds without anybody losing face. I have watched him do it to people twenty years older. It's not charm exactly, it's that he asks the second question instead of the first one.

The other thing is he has never been yelled at by a booster. Nothing in his life has prepared him for what an angry 63 year old with a nine-figure net worth sounds like on a Sunday morning after a home loss. That is a real job requirement and no amount of being smart in a room fixes it.

The quote from that survey that should scare people isn't in the article, it's the one every assistant I know said privately this week: he named a redshirt freshman the starter in his first offseason. Coaches don't do that in year one. Not because they don't see it — because the first year is when you're buying credibility, and you buy credibility by not being interesting.

He skipped that step entirely. Either he doesn't know the step exists or he decided he doesn't need it.

Mansour is 28. Here are the college head coaches who were hired youngest, and it's a stranger list than you think History

Been down a rabbit hole since Tuesday. Everybody keeps saying "nobody has ever done this," which is not quite true — it's that nobody has done it lately, and the reason why is more interesting than the trivia.

  • Amos Alonzo Stagg — 30 at Chicago, 1892. The sport was four guys and a field.
  • Fielding Yost — 30 at Michigan, 1901. Went and won basically everything, which is annoying.
  • Ara Parseghian — 28 at Miami (OH), 1951. Twenty-eight. Same number.
  • Bear Bryant — 31 at Maryland, 1945.
  • Bud Wilkinson — 31 at Oklahoma, 1947. Won three national titles.
  • Lane Kiffin — 31 at Tennessee, 2009. Results may vary.

The catch: almost every one of those guys had either played the sport at a high level, coached in it for a decade by 30 because they started at 19, or both. Parseghian was a pro running back before he was 25 and had already been an assistant. The age was never actually the unusual part.

What's unusual about Mansour isn't 28. It's 28 with four years of any kind of coaching, three of them in high school. That's the number nobody on that list comes close to, and it's the number people should be citing instead of his birthday.

This is the best post anyone has made about this hire and it's on page four because it doesn't have the word trombone in it.

The Parseghian comp is doing something to my brain though. 1951 Miami of Ohio is not 2026 Big Ten. In 1951 you could learn the job in front of 8,000 people. There is no version of this where he gets to be bad in private.

Michigan State's win total is out and I have thoughts Betting

4.5, over is −115, under is −105. It opened at 5 and got hammered down within about forty minutes, which tells you everything about who's betting this game right now (people who read one headline).

I'm on the over and I'll tell you exactly why: two guaranteed wins to start, a Rutgers road game that is a real football game and not a formality, and Northwestern at home. That's four. You need one more from Nebraska, Illinois, Washington or UCLA over eight opportunities. One.

The under case is "the roster is worse than you think and the coach doesn't know how to lose gracefully yet," which, fine, that's a real case. But you're laying −105 on a team having a total collapse in year one under a guy whose entire public identity is preparation. Not for me.

Also somebody in the Detroit market has a prop up for whether he does anything band-related at a home game and I refuse to explain further.

"he's been very careful about the band thing" is a sentence about a Big Ten head football coach

under. easy under. write it down. this is a 3-9 team and week 4 in East Lansing is a get-right game for us

Worth flagging that the number moved before anybody in the market had seen a practice. The books are pricing the noise, not the team. That'll correct by mid-September and probably not in the direction this thread thinks.

Is anyone else weirdly rooting for the Michigan State thing to work? Casual

Washington fan. We play them week 11 and I would like us to win that game by 30.

And yet I have read every article about this hire, watched the whole press conference, and caught myself hoping it works. Not "it'll be funny if it works." Hoping.

I think it's because the last decade of this sport has been every school doing the same six things with the same forty guys and getting the same results, and then acting shocked. This is the first hire in years where I genuinely do not know what happens. That's worth something to me even if it's stupid.

Anyway. Tell me I'm an idiot.

Four years ago this sub would have posted "lol Indiana" under anything with our name in it. Then a guy nobody wanted came in and did something nobody thought was available.

I'm not saying Mansour is that. Cignetti had thirty years of winning behind him and this guy has four seasons total. Totally different bet. But I remember exactly what it felt like to have the whole sport decide in August what our season was, and I'm not doing that to somebody else.

every Indiana comment now comes with a free reminder of the title run and honestly you've earned the right, I just want you to know we all see you doing it

"rooting for it to work" is a thing people say so they can act superior in either direction later. if it works you were early. if it fails you were generous. it costs you nothing.

speak for yourself. I'm having a great time. this is the most interesting thing that's happened to this program since 2015 and half of you are treating it like a funeral

rooting for a 28 year old to not have the worst year of his life in public is not a hot take, it's just being a person. some of y'all should try it before the season starts.

Update: this got way bigger than I expected and I want to be clear I still think they go 4-8.

Rooting for something and predicting it are different activities. I'd forgotten that until this week.

4-8 with a nice attitude about it. put it on the poster
